Adjust the appearance of the Activities button (GNOME)

I've been trying to adjust the default theme and so far haven't had much problem, except with the Activities button.  I can't change the color of it and if I try to use an SVG to replace it, the default bar just renders on top of it.  I've tried using other people's themes where the appearance of the activities button is different and it's the same problem.
