XRandR does not recognise my laptop display

I recently got a Dell latitude 5400 to run Arch Linux. Whenever I try to run the command xrandr in shell, I always get an error along the lines of

Cannot open display

This also happens whenever I try to initialize a window manager through Xinit or if I directly run the command for running the window manager in shell. I currently use a Wayland-based window manager and whenever I run xrandr I get a proper output  with all the possible resolutions. If anyone can please explain this mystery I would be really happy!!!
